What is OPEN STUDIO? How does it work?
Once a month, the RISING TIDE | Zoom Art Play Dates will host a session; OPEN STUDIO, for subscribers to the Studio Diaries.
We meet on Zoom, I share my screen and we draw (or paint) from reference images against a timer.
Occasionally, we might do something different such as Sketchbook Spreads, Colour Palette Play, or Mixed media Exploration.
Following is an example blog post / email of what subscribers will get the Wednesday prior to the Zoom session.
After the Zoom session, this blog post will be edited & updated to include the REPLAY.

Please note; occasionally a session will be recorded and posted publicly on both my You Tube Channel and here on Substack to show FREE subscribers what we do.

Wondering what to talk about on a Zoom Art Play Date?
Just in case you are worried that you may accidentally say something you wish you hadn’t, HERE are some tips on what is appropriate to talk about in a Zoom Art Play Date.
Want to join us in the Studio?
Our topic for this (EXAMPLE) session is:
Cedar - Studio Boss & Beach Lover
For this example session, I have included images of my dog, Cedar (see PDF below). Art Play Dates will usually be something related to Coastal Environments or Lifestyle.
In this example I have used all of my own reference images, but often I will use copyright free images from Unsplash. I also love using Pinterest. To reference the photographers, I include links to a Pinterest folders with all of the images used in the Art Play Date.
Area’s I may focus on:
Hand - eye coordination
Shape & Size Relationships
Values (light / dark)
Scribbling quickly and not being perfect
Example Materials I may be using: (You can use whatever you have available)
Watercolour / Gouache paints
Coloured Pencil
Acrylic Markers
Watercolour Markers
Procreate
Mixed Media Paper
How the session will run:
Each Zoom Art Play Date is 90 mins.
The Zoom Meeting will Open 15 minutes before the scheduled time to ensure you are ready and comfortable to begin.
Each session will be different and can range from a fast and fun session of sketching different images every 2-5 minutes, to ‘slow sketching’ that can last 30 minutes.
There will be a bell sound when each images’ time is up (i.e. at the end of a 2 minute sketch, or at the end of a 10 minute drawing).
Occasionally, an Open Studio Art Play Date might be a FREE DRAW - where you get to do your own thing as you work alongside others in the Studio.
There will be a 15 minute sharing time at the end of the Art Play Date, where those who choose to share, will be spotlighted so we can all see what they have created during the Zoom.
Keep in mind these sessions are not intentionally designed for children, however, I will leave that to your discretion.
Session Schedule:
9.45 am - Zoom Meeting opens | use of chat for personal links etc.
10 am - Recording starts | Art Play Date begins
10.45 am - 5 minute Sip & Stretch break (recording continues)
10.50 am - Art resumes
11.15 am - Optional Sharing Session (occasionally this will be extended to allow everyone to share. Its okay to leave early if you need to go).
